OPEN GOLF
Open Golf Returns To Sandwich 14th - 17th July 2011

The British Open will be staged at Royal St George's Golf Club, Sandwich, Kent 14th - 17th July 2011.
The Open was last held here in 2003 and was a massive success not only for local business but residents as well.

Dr Laidlaw Purves of the Royal Wimbledon Golf Club, designed and established the Club in 1887.  The Club was intended to serve the needs of London golfers who were only able to play their golf on often crowded and unkept courses in the area.  Named St. George's, it was to become the English rival to Scotland's St. Andrew's.  Royal status was bestowed on the Club by King Edward VII in May 1902.

This magnificent Links provides a severe test for even the greatest of golfers and the fact that only three Open winners, Bill Rogers in 1981, Greg Norman in 1993 and Ben Curtis in 2003, have managed to be under par after the 72 holes, speaks for itself.

When Ben Curtis lifted the Claret Jug he was renting a local cottage a few miles from the course. Ben would have enjoyed a special pass to get him onto the course each day, in 2011 like 2003 there will be massive park and ride operation all around Sandwich offering short drive access to the worlds greatest golf experience.

A massive multi million pound cash boost, visitors from around the globe, international media attention and the top golfers in the world are being given a big open welcome with news that the Open Golf Tournament is returning to Sandwich.

In 2011 Prince's Golf Club has again been chosen to host final qualifying for the Open Championship when the event returns to Royal St. George's.

This major news confirms East Kent as an international golfing destination. It also comes as Kent prepares for the London Olympic Games in five years time, and follows the launch of the Kent Strategy for the 2012 Games. This also follows the Archery World Cup in Dover in 2007.
